Prepare for a Career in the Arts!


The Fundamental Arts program provides you with the opportunity to develop and enhance your skills as an artist through courses in art history, drawing, design, animation, digital photography and more. You will explore mediums such as lino-printing, etching, sculpture, collage, acrylic and watercolour paint.

Strong emphasis is placed on learning the basics of effective design and enhancing your drawing skills. This program helps you develop your portfolio and prepare yourself for a future in the visual arts.

Program Learning Outcomes


Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be able to:

  1. Create two and three-dimensional fine art and design projects from concept to finished work using a wide range of materials, processes, and techniques.
  2. Use the design process to develop and solve visual problems using various strategies in generating ideas.
  3. Apply the formal elements and principles of design to create effective compositions.
  4. Integrate physical art techniques, materials, and processes with emerging media art technologies.
  5. Apply creative and critical thinking skills in relation to visual art.
  6. Communicate ideas and feelings effectively through artistic skills and language to a variety of audiences.
  7. Display skill in observational drawing and the use of a range of drawing materials.
  8. Identify, discuss, and critique artworks while considering their social, historical, and conceptual contexts.
  9. Develop a professional art and design portfolio through studio-based projects in a variety of media.

An introduction to the development of art in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the identification of well-known artists throughout history. Explore the key stylistic characteristics of major artistic movements. Using the Feldman method of art criticism, learn to discuss and evaluate various forms of creative expression. Gain a wide variety of artistic experiences to help move from the role of observer to one of active engagement in the world of art.

Learn drawing terminology and improve observational drawing skills. Develop the technique of sighting, apply the rules of perspective, and create drawings using line, shape, value and tone. Learn the proportions of the figure and the face using gesture drawing, and more sustained drawing, employing both clothed and nude figures.

Study photography basics in lighting, exposure, and composition and use those skills to capture and edit video, master Photoshop, design a portfolio, and develop creative visual content for online & traditional platforms.
